I looked at them again and still can't believe the quality! My film and slides from the 70's look much worse!

It was all in the format. The recording camera in those day was a large format 'plate' camera such as the Speed Graphic using individual Kodachrome stock film sheets. The Speed Graphic was light enough (just) to be hand held for action shots but tripod mounted for landscape or posed subjects. The focusing bellows was adjustable to eliminate distortions.
I have a book on US Navy floatplanes and even repoduced in print the quality of the monochrome panchromatic film images is superb.
I particularly like the soft colour reproduction.
