Frank Whittles Jet Engine Development in the USA 1942

Interesting, reminiscent of the book The Deadly Fuze which tells the story of the VT fuze. The Americans had been working on a proximity fuze but a sketch of a circuit from Britain set them on the right course. They were able to put huge resources into the development and manufacture under very strict secrecy, similarly people on the project carrying samples were issued with firearms. It has been out of print for years but well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy.
