Recognise Anyone?

Folks,

Please take a look at the attached picture.

These Royal Air Force personnel, along with one American sitting front centre, was taken in 1943.

It was taken in Main Street, Newtownbutler in County Fermanagh which is a considerable distance from any of the closest Airfields.

There was a Chain Home Radar Station commissioned near Newtownbutler in 1942

My question is - Would this be the type of compliment for such a Radar Station?

Does anyone recognise anyone in this picture??

Andy

Andy,

I'm pretty sure this is a photo of some of the personnel from Newtownbutler, which was an MRU or Mobile Radio Unit (essentially a transportable smaller version of a Chain Home station). The reason for my deduction? The corporal third from the right appears to have the Signals branch badge above his stripes and no-one in the photo has any aircrew badges on their left breast. This indicates they were ground crew. Additionally, the person in the middle at the front is in USAAF uniform, which would tie in with being a member of the Electronics Training Group (ETG) of US signals personnel who were sent to a number of radar units to learn what it is all about.

I hope this helps.

There's an awful lot of corporals in that picture, not many fist & sparks badges, maybe 1 or 2.

Perhaps some sort of training course rather than a uniti photo?

... or there were a lot of Air Defence Operators (as they were called in my day)? And perhaps it was a photo of the non-comms on site?
