IIRC Shemya and Adak were occasionally used by the RAF Victors for "Air Sampling Experiments"(!!!). These seem to have occurred shortly after a Russian nuclear test!!!

Wow! it's been quite a while since I've been here. It's good to be back working on my project again. I have a question. Is there a good WWII map of the Alllied Airbases in the Aleutians available anywhere?
During my 2 year haitus, a friend designed some runways but there are problems and he's asked me to locate his runways (in the sim) and check out their co-ordinates. If I had a map showing all the locations it would be a huge help in doing this.
A very informative thread. I like many had no idea about the campaign.
I found this documentary on YouTube. Adak airfield looked a bleak place. Benbecula or MPA are lightweight by comparison.
There are some sequences of airfield contraction in the documentart. PSP seems to have been used widely for speedy construction of strips and standings.
Adak airfield living accommodation undated but just post-war. The caption says 'unused living accommodation' and there was a move to recover (salvage) usable inventory
Recent new sat images have given a much better picture of the abandoned Japanese airfield on Attu..the outline clearly visible in these images from Earth Explorer
