Photographed this 'family memorial' headstone in Kinloch Rannoch

It is for Tommy WHYTE lost over Germany 23/24 September 1943 but the CWGC record has him identified as Thomas WHITE. I wonder if the CWGC have got the name wrong?

Bill Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1943 has him as White too. Lancaster DV271 106 Sqn, RAF Syerston, ops to Mannheim. Six of crew died and are buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery. The 7th became a PoW.

One would assume that the family got the spelling right. CWGC do a wonderful job but they are not infallible!

Could be that he had been enlisted in the RAF under the wrong spelling perhaps even because his birth registration was wrong.

There is a local case from WWI where two brothers were killed on the same day and both had the same name which quite confused the Army Records Office! One had been given a Gaelic first name but when the birth was registered, it was registered as the English translation and that was used on his army record.
