Airfield Location signs.

I assume all signs were post war but were there any pre-war. I'm sure I recall an RAF Hawkinge sign in the late sixties but couldn't say what colour or type it was. Manston definitely had a blue and red at some point, also from the late sixties or early seventies. Despite going to Biggin Hill regularly from about 1967/8 onwards I can't say that I recall any signs with RAF on them. Probably because I didn't take any notice of them as I could have cycled there with my eyes shut (only 45 mins from home)

The modern ones Canberra described seem to have appeared but I couldn't say when.

I also wonder if any of the old type are still lurking in the hedgerows? Were there any cast iron versions for mounting on the old style sign posts?

I dont know when it was changed by the Ministry of Transport but the signs are now red lettering on a white background and the sign is edged in red. Thats except for Chicksands where the name isnt displayed.

Didn't notice that when we visited the museum a few years ago but I suppose not surprising consider who is there.
