I was reading a snippet about Synthetic Night Navigation Training in the No.6 Group Appendices (AIR 25/134) March 1942. I assume these are the tinted goggles used to imitate night vision in daylight? The snippet implies that the original goggles were very uncomfortable for long periods and that the new ones were much better.
Also that the original 350 watt light bulb at the navigators position had been replace by a 200 watt one which emits sufficient light without cooking the poor navigator.
Has anyone researched this aspect of synthetic training and if so it would make a good article for Airfield Review or at least an information packed post on the forum The snippet was intriguing but I didn't want to get sidetracked into researching it.

Why would a 350 watt lamp be required at the Nav's position? Synthetic (simulated) ground training would have used an enclosed cubicle to exclude daylight. Of course that level of brightness could have been achieved by using multiple lower wattage bulbs.

I assume it was because the navigation officer was also wearing the goggles and the very bright lamps were to recreate the 40w lamp. I also wanted to know if the rest of the crew were aboard and goggled up. As it was noted as a navigation exercise was it only the navigation?
