This is not an advert for Maplin's but I have a new catalog arrived and in it is a helicopter £49.99. It has a camera attached with video or stills and 128meg memory. Its not my cup of tea but it could be used in the airfield photographers armory. Nice to look at buildings that are covered from view when a few more feet in hight could see over. There is also a long pole that can also be used?? Interested to hear other peoples thoughts.
I believe one of the AiX members has used something similar but from an RC Aircraft for filming over Rivenhall, there is some video of it on that thread and it looks really good. There is definitely something in it and its worth exporing.
The helicopter idea is good and it would be very useful to snap the inaccessible. The better option would be remote viewing on the ground as you don't alway know if you are taking what you expect. Keep an eye out for surplus UAV's
The ball looks a good idea as a gimmick but the quality looks poor (obviously). Great for parties, I would think.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Hollywood and TV are now using nothing more than a high end DSLR mounted on an RC heli body. These DSLRs can record broadcast quality video and the shots they get are amazing.
Even with a proper camera carrying model aircraft there is a requirement that it is registered and insured against third party risks. There are restrictions on where they can be flown due to NIMBY complaints of noise and, more importantly, danger of mid-air collision with full size. A helicopter promises better control in limited spaces with the ability to hover but don't confuse the MAPLIN toy with the type of model that is really needed and the expertise to pilot such a craft.
