Please will users of Photobucket and similar photo hosting services please note that if you post a link on here to a photo on one of these services, and then subsequently re-organise, your photos, delete your photos or cancel your use of that service, then the photos also disappear from this forum

This, more often than not, makes your post completely valueless to those who follow behind you

Any suggestions on preferred way forward? I have used photobucket and do not really like it but at the time it was what was available. I much prefer attaching photos directly to a post.

For myself, I will also always attach photos directly to the forum.

Obviously people can do what they want, my issue is with people who make posts and subsequently make changes on these photo hosting services without realising the consequences.

I have just edited a two posts where the user had moved some photos into a folder and deleted some others......

The biggest problem is longevity of the hosting service. These seem to be based on trends and are apt to re-brand themselves for no reason that makes sense to mere mortals. I understand Panoramio is going or has gone. I have hundreds of links to photos on there so I dare say that will prove to be another waste of time, plus I wanted to contact the photographer for permission to use many of them.

Even paying for storage is no guarantee whatsoever. I suspect this current trend of re-branding will leave gaping holes in the forum over the next few years.

On the reasons why we used hosting services, was, I believe, on the original forum (2008/9) space was limited or expensive so we were encouraged to post a link.

I now upload to the forum as using Photobucket requires a bit of time, mainly because I can't recall the easy to remember password I created last time I changed it and the forgotton password option is not always quick.

If you see any of my posts with photos missing PM me directly and I will re-instate them

Rich, there are a couple of your posts with missing links that I have noticed & meant to remind you about. I'll PM or call you about them as soon as I can.

As for Photobucket, if a Photobucket account is left dormant for a long period of time I think that will cut the links with forums such as ours as well after a certain period of time. I'm not sure if that's still the case but certainly was a few years ago.

Photobucket has been a nightmare to use during last week. They where apparently doing some maintenance on there & it sent the whole site into turmoil for a few days.

I do find it a real pain to use these days (& judging by comments by fellow users on the web, I'm not the only one). I just find it very slow & full of annoying little problems constantly. I think it may be time to find a better alternative (not FLICKR!)

.

Indeed Peter - all forums used to have restrictions on uploads - and also smallish image sizes.
Photobucket is a pain to use sometimes so I might try some direct uploads sometime.

Does a direct upload retain a copy of the image within the forum database so that it is always available even if the posters PC is edited?

I understand that our new improved forum is able to better handle decent quality images, and the historic limitations we had back then

While I am unimpressed with photobucket, it is not the service itself i have a problem with, but the fact that moving, reorganising or deleting photos within it and similar services has unintended consequences here

It was these unintended consequence I particularly wanted to highlight
