Can't seem to find listings for Hebridean islands like Stornoway and Benbecula; do they exist?

Benbecula is under Invernesshire but as I'm not familiar with historic Scottish counties and their boundaries I can't say where Stornoway might be. Everything is so slow these days I gave up looking.

It can be very confusing!

One way to check is open a Canmore record in the area then select Administrative Areas

Administrative Areas

Council Western Isles
Parish Stornoway
Former Region Western Isles Islands Area
Former District Western Isles
Former County Ross And Cromarty

As with England, boundaries have changed periodically so can get more complicated.

The definitive way to locate a place for the forum is the Gazeteer of British Place names, as described in the FAQ area of the forum

See
www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum/h...oes-not-exist#146896

Or go direct to
gazetteer.org.uk/index

Where it will tell you Stornaway is in Ross shire

Some care is required however where it is necessary to consult the accompanying map as the location name you are referring to may be named after a place in an adjacent county...., we have had a few of those

That is one reason that best to look up the county on Canmore, most airfields should have a record there, if not then inform HES and they might add a record.

I find the best way to search is using PASTMAP.

As in Wales, you sometimes find only the Gaelic name is used or at least the Gaelic spelling (Ordnance Survey can be 'bad' for doing that though seem to have improved now) so a search for the English name might not find it especially is spelt incorrectly as in Stornoway above!
