Oakley airfield, Buckinghamshire

I was returning from the South East yesterday and thought I would make a diversion past Oakley airfield. I was surprised to see a large part of the flying field fenced off and construction work going on, another housing development I thought, however an internet search revealed that the site is not going to be housing but be developed for the testing of Connected & Autonomous Vehicles. CAVWAY will use the eastern half of the airfield. The western half will not be affected at all. They will add a single storey office building and an equipment storage building near the current hangar (B1) building. The plan is to add various roads on and around some of the existing runways as shown on the however Google Earth image (on their website). These will create several configurations of two and three-lane highway junctions as well as an area where any specific road crossing can be re-created, complete with traffic lights or roundabouts.
If you have ever visited Oakley airfield the three runway layout still exist. It is quite atmospheric particularly on an autumn day where you can appreciate the expanse and bleakness of the place. It always amazed me that it was not torn up for hardcore when the M40 was built, which is only a matter of metres away. The only damage the M40 did was separate the bomb dump from the main site, many of the loading bays, tracks and storage buildings are still there, along with a firing butt which is completely fenced off.
