Unknown matting, poss. Kingscliffe

 I came across this image recently, the P-51's codes suggest 20FG/77FS (LC-X) so Kingscliffe looks likely. What is the matting? Could almost be wooden planks. Anyone know?

It doesn't look as though it came in a roll so maybe only used as temporary hardstands?

I suppose it depends on what was in them originally. The quadrant shelters at Fenns Moss and Dee Marshes were made from aircraft packing cases but I have no idea if that was wood or plywood.

I've seen photos of P-51s on wooden hardstandings at Fowlmere and Martlesham. An 8th Fighter Command idea, maybe. As for aircraft packing cases, they were made from pretty solid wood.

Thanks Dave, that would explain why the Fenns Moss packing case quadrant shelter survived into the post war period. I did wonder.
