I see that it is some years since I have had need to pick your knowledge but with a 100% success rate I am bound to seek your help again please. I am currently working on the film Mrs Miniver (1942) filmed entirely in MGM Studios in California despite the whole of the action suposedly taking place in England. As such the studio work has the occasional piece of UK footage inserted to reinforce the fact. One particular sequence shows the son, who is 'an RAF pilot' taking off for action as per the attachments. I am wondering therefore if this could be identified for me and perhaps any other information that maybe to hand. As previously all help will be fully acknowledged on our Site.
Many thanks
Richard

Either Birmingham or Leavesden looking at the control tower.
Many civil pre war airfields had control towers but military airfields often only had a wooden 'watch office'.

Thanks Terry, I cannot make that church fit to either of those locations at present, but I will continue to work on that.

Taking the control tower in your photo, there is a similarity to Lympne in a photo on this forum; the curved front to the building is shown at photo #19 in the listing for Lympne without the visual control room on the top floor but unless considerable re-building took place before 1942 the hangars are wrong.
It looks to me as if there are buildings big enough for a production facility which is why I suggested Leavesden as a 'possible'

Is that an 'F' type hanger on the right side? I did think of Warmwell but the church doesn't fit. Was the Church in a continuous sequence or was it a splice job?

It certainly looks like an ''F' Type.  I've only seen them at Halton, Cranwell (North)  and Manston;  they were often sited at seaplane bases too.
So we're looking at an airfield with at least one 'F' Type hangar, pre-war control tower and other hangar types, possibly T2 or Bellman.
Warmwell looks to small to me.

I know nothing about churches but it looks to me as if the one in the photo has had it's steeple removed, maybe because of bombing or maybe for its lead content.
Is that a Blenheim Mk1 at bottom right?

By George I think I've got it.
It's the original Prestwick Airport but don't ask me about the church!

It does look like a good fit. I wonder if the church (or kirk) was demolished when the airfield was expanded either mid war or post war? On the other hand it might not be a church.
