All of the forum threads are single threaded or linear, that is to say that when you reply to a post it becomes the newest post in that thread and is added to the end of the thread.
This is a very different system to that which you might experience on facebook for instance, where replies can branch off (and sometimes be hidden) from any previous post or reply
If you are replying to the previous newest post, then the conversation makes sense as it follows on. However if you are responding to a post further "up" the thread then it becomes difficult for those following on to see what it is you are replying to.
In these circumstances you should use the "quote" button rather than the "reply" button. The "quote" button pastes everything from that post into your new post and places it between "quote" tags.
(Quote tags are the word quote in square brackets at the front and /quote in square brackets at the end)
You can edit anything inside the quotes, perhaps to focus on a single statement or photograph, without affecting the original post you are quoting
You should put your own words, etc outside the quote tags
It has been suggested that if the post you are quoting is not visible on the page where you are then it would it be helpful to further identify that post by date
