New Museum Proposal for (ex-RAF Bobbington/Halfpenny Green...

Hi, Everyone!
Just to inform you that we have set up a support group & presented a proposal to the new owners of (ex-)RAF Bobbington/Halfpenny Green, to set up and develop an airfield museum, covering its history from construction to modern day. Very early days yet, but the Operations Manager is keen, and with his support and an apparently equally interested & receptive Owners' Conglomerate, it's looking promising.

We've requested consideration of rebuilding & use of the old cinema building, right on the South-Eastern corner of the boundary, which has its own gated access, and though these buildings are quite derelict now, they're still strong enough to resurrect & preserve for long term use.

We've already been offered various artifacts and aircraft parts (some belonging to Ansons that were based there but crashed further afield), so there's potential to develop a great facility, in good time.

On a personal interest note, my Grandfather was in the very first "intake" batch of trainees there on 3rd May 1941, for the newly-formed Air Observers' Training Unit, so I will be following up with research on the history of all the Units that were stationed at the airfield - therefore, any such information, photos, old films, paraphernalia, anecdotes, artifacts, etc, would be very welcome indeed!

For now, we've set up a Facebook Group just to get started on discussions & list-building of interested supporters & potential volunteers, in readiness for further discussions with the Owners & Management when the time comes; I hope it's acceptable to post the web link to the Group here? Assuming the proposal is accepted, agreed and followed through, then we'll also develop a proper, stand-alone website, plus other social media accounts where appropriate.

That is good news I have often passed by the camp area on the footpaths and am always bemused by its extent and my lack of understanding of what went on and where it went on.

Welcome to the group! What a great idea for 'The Green. I was a tower controller there around 1870 when the airfield had a full ATC service so I have quite a lot of memorabilia and photos. I have also reserached the wartime history. I have applied to join your FB group.
