Hi folks,

Just signed up here after lurking for a good while, and thought I'd better introduce myself. Originally from Blackpool (did a bit of flying out of Squires Gate back in the 1980s), but then moved to Lincolnshire last year partly to indulge an interest in former Bomber Command aerodromes (my late father flew with 550 Squadron out of RAF North Killingholme in 1945). As it is, we've ended up not so close to NK, but within easy reach of both RAF Coningsby and East Kirkby so I can hopefully get a regular dose of Lancasters and Merlins. We're also very close to the former RAF Wainfleet bombing range, and it's intriguing to think that my Dad could well have seen the area (and maybe even the house) from above while they were doing bombing practices.

Edited to add: I'm also interested in ROC Monitoring Posts having been a member of the crew at Lytham Post in 1990/91.

Right, enough of my ramblings, let's see if I can add a few photos to the North Killingholme page...

Tony

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure that 550 Sqn would have used Wainfleet, at least on a regular basis. The nearest ranges were Alkborough, Black Walk, Hamilton Hill, Yarburgh and of course Donna Nook/Theddlethorpe. Similar distance but across the Humber you had Roos and Weeton (Trinity Sands).

Did your father keep his logbook? I have been scouring the web for online copies of aircrew logbooks and found some very useful information but as with most records bombing practice wasn't deemed important enough to record the range used in a lot of cases. However the most reliable for locations seemed to be the navigator or air gunners.

I like ranges, if you hadn't guessed :)
