Hello, this is my first post and I have checked the existing information on the Forum.
My father was based at RAF Morpeth in 1943-44 as a Towed Target Operator. Flying initially in Lysanders then later in Martinets.
I am researching his career and trying to write up as much as I can on places he was based (amongst other things). I have the Morpeth Herald and Air North articles which are extremely useful. Would welcome any suggestions or help for further information and in particular an airfield plan. Many thanks.
I think you will regret giving your email address as your name as you could well end up being saturated with spam emails offering you everything from Thai Brides to 'you have just been awarded £123 million...' and cleaning out your bank account at the press of a button.
However Record Site Plans are available from RAF Museum Hendon. www.rafmuseum.org.uk/research/
Contact the Department of Research and Information Service (DORIS) - they have an email contact. State clearly what you want, give a terrestrial address and phone number and they will copy and mail them too you with an Invoice for payment. Probably best that you e-mail them first and they will give you an idea of availabilty and costs.
They state: The Royal Air Force Museum holds over 2000 ‘Record Site Plan’ drawings, mainly of RAF airfields in the UK and overseas, but also some of other stations such as radar sites, dating from the 1930s onwards.
These were originally compiled by the Air Ministry Works Directorate, and show the layout of the site, identifying each building. Sometimes the key to the plan gives the standard RAF drawing numbers of the buildings used. The Museum also holds copies of some of these buildings plans. Copies of these plans can usually be supplied
The Morpeth plans you want are 1385/50 & 1386/50. The former is the Airfield itself and the latter the Dispersed Sites.
Hope this helps
Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

Thanks, thats what comes of entering Profile details when tired- I have changed it now. Appreciate the warning. Thanks also for the information on airfield plans.
Yes, according to my recollection of what he said and a visit there in 1975 with him, he towed a target or "drogue". Initially flying in Lysander TTs and then in Mile Martinet TTs, and flying almost exclusively with Polish Pilots. I have written up a fair amount in draft using recollections, his logbook and published sources. I am keen to find other local sources and would appreciate any suggestions. We visit Northumberland for holidays regularly. Thanks.
