Just stumbled over this site looking for info on Charmy Down. I would be very interested if anyone can let me have any history nuggets of this place. I am ex RAF Ground radar + radio tech. (demob 1975), so anything about rotor radar particularly appreciated.
I live not far from site and have walked footpaths around it as a Cotswold Voluntary Warden and installed kissing gates. In fact I am leading a walk over it on Nov 4th hence my searching for info just now.
A great pity the control tower looks so sad and neglected.
Since you have a specific interest in Charmy Down airfield you may wish to order a copy of the Record Site PLan (RSP) from the RAF Museum (DORIS) Department of Research and Information Services.
They appear to have only one RSP for CD and that is the Airfield so ask for Drawing Number Charmy Down 4426/44 (ad)
The RSP reflects the layout of the airfield in 1944 but be aware that RSPs are frequently in error and purport to show the status at the date of survey. Consequently there may have been changes after that date.
I think that the Shooting-in Butt remains are still standing complete with frontal hardstanding for the aircraft:
Thanks for that. Will send them a request for the RSP.
Yes the shooting butts remain and are clearly seen when entering the site from the east (up a very steep path now resurfaced). And also further on an area with security fencing still up which I now understand to be the site of the rotor radar heads. So its all coming together. A fellow warden sent me a link he found to a video made of the site - see vimeo.com/43112637 - Others may find it interesting.
