Hi, I am Phil Swallow, from Croydon, South London, UK. I am a local historian and am fortunate to live close to Biggin Hill, Kenley and Croydon the result being there is a lot of WW2 history in my area. I live close to the site of the former Addington Air Ministry Works Repair Depot. I have also researched Hamsey Green Airfield and the Gardner family, something that goes back to my early years living close to the site.
Hi Phil, welcome to the site. We'd pleased to see any photos or information you have on local sites, especially anything not already covered in a topic. Hope you enjoy the content here.
Welcome to the forum. My area of research is bombing ranges and recently discovered Biggin Hill had one for the fighter bombers. It also think Kenley had one for the same purpose but so far difficult to prove. Visited all three of the famous airfields with Biggin Hill being the easiest to cycle to from Eltham (1968-1972). Kenley had to wait until I got a motorbike and so did Croydon (1973-1975).
I hated Croydon as you could get in but I could never find the Bromley road so always left via Purley - the wrong way. Much easier with sat nav today, or is it?
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Welcome Phil,
I research WW2 airfield bomb stores and UK WW2 explosives production and storage sites. Also recorded all (I think) locations of AM Works Repair Depots.
Croydon and Kenley were fighter airfiels so no dedicated bomb stores but had Small Arms Ammunition (SAA) stores.
I was born in Mill Hill NW7 so misspent some of my childhood in the pillboxes of Hendon aerodrome.
