The testing in question involves removing some of the asphalt runway. It's something we can do on conventional roads but you are restricted in how you test on public highways.
I understand it might be a delicate area for some of you as you wish to preserve what there is as Chilly has rightly intimated. However, it might be beneficial to certain airfields where sections of runway or linking roads are beyond saving. Or, as is the case at Sherburn the runway periodically requires to be resurfaced.
