CAN YOU HELP?

My name is Jonathan Morris and I am a reporter at BBC News Online in the South West. I am writing a feature about old RAF airfields and what becomes of them after the RAF has pulled out.

I am particularly interested in these airfields and need up to date pictures from them:

Predannack Airfield, Lizard Peninsula - Cornwall
RAF Upwood- Cambs
RAF Stenigot - Lincs
RAF Cardington - Beds
RAF Finningley - South Yorks
RAF Wainfleet - Lincs
RAF Saxa Vord - Shetlands

Hi Jonathan

Just to clarify the only airfield in your list currently used for flying by the military is Predannack (satellite of RNAS Culdrose). Cardington is where airships were built pre WW2 and various balloons etc were tested. Saxa Vord and Stenigot were/are radar sites. Finningley is now a civilian airport (Robin Hood International). Upwood closed and sold. Wainfleet was a weapons range.

Plenty of up to date pictures on the urban explorer forums. Upwood, Cardington and Predannack are popular locations.

It does not actually say that they are from Chain Home though someone could jump to that conclusion. Stenigot was Chain Home but I think the dishes are from its later use for Tropo (or is it Forward?) Scatter comms.

The dishes were used for Tropospheric Comms (forward scatter) and there were other stations in the chain. It was known as "Ace high"
