A newby from down under...

I have just come across this site which to me brings back a few memories. I have not been in the forces but between 1961 and 1963 I did install many of the microwave relay links for the USAF Third Air Force in the UK. At that time I worked for the Marconi Company who was awarded the contract by Western Electric.

In essence the sites went from Fylingdales to Rinstead in the south and to Longfosse (France) via Swingate near Dover - and all points between. From memory there were about 30 such repeaters and/or teminals. Most sites were on RAF property but not many had air strips.

I will go through the site in more detail and make any comments where I can. Meanwhile the Garrowby Hill site was one with a Marconi repeater as suggested by one of the posts.

Welcome to AiX. I have found your posts most interesting and I hope you are able to add more as you go through the site and see the locations you remember. My own specific interest lies within Lincolnshire and the microwave repeater stations at Crowland, Spitalgate, Kirton-in-Lindsey and Elsham Wolds, with also the link between Patrington and North Coates. Do you recall involvement with any of those sites?

Hi Bill,

Yes, I can help a little on Crowland, Spitalgate and Kirton-in-Lindsay. I can't on the Elsham, Patrington or North Coates because they were not part of our USAF contract.

An allied subject - having worked for Marconi way back I am one of a number of people around the world documenting the history of the company. This is being done in the form of Wikis which we will make public once certain complex copyright issues have been resolved with the current owners. One Wiki is for Communications and is where the USAF project has been documented.

I do have a listing of all the microwave stations we installed for the USAF which I will gladly offer for your website. Since it covers many locations where would be the best thread to place this?

How interesting. I am sure that there would be widespread welcome for any information you could post on the USAF microwave network. I think that perhaps a new thread could be started on the following sub-forum within AiX:

You may find that in the 20+ pages of this sub-forum some of the USAF sites already have their own thread.
