My brother and I have been working on our family history. We know that our late father was called up in 1941 and served as a wireless mechanic in the RAF . He was demobbed in 1946. We have his service record but some of the abbreviations have defeated us.
Please can anyone enlighten us?

No 1 S depot
No 1 S D
No 1 Sig Depot

No 1 signals Depot

usually training schools. Wireless equals Signals.
Trouble is those who wrote the records, the abbreviations were second nature to them.

Something a bit strange here (not unusual!)

No,1 Signals Depot was at West Drayton in 1942 and in 1944 had sub-sites at Faygate, Gt Baddow, Gt Witcombe, Honington. Ingham, Minerva Road, and Staines. The majority of these units were CEFPs all in No.26 Signals Group.

Harrogate does not feature in any of my SD161 copies other than: No.7 Personnel Reception Centre and Medical Training Establishment & Depot.

Questions: EDIT: I now suspect Harrogate and 1SD were two separate stations which your father was based at. In 1942 the former also came under the title AM (Harrogate) Unit in No.20 Group, Technical Training Command. I presume that means 'Air Ministry Unit' which is anybody's guess as to its function.

Dad was at Harrogate from 28.11 41 until he went to No.1 Signal School, Cranwell on 08.04.42
