Hi Everyone, think it's time I got some old memories out into the wide world. I am now 80 years old so there is not long left so anything I can help with please post a.s.a.p. so here goes: Stationed RAF Cranwell June 1953 to March 1956 in Air Traffic Control. Part duty at RAF Barkston Heath while it was being used as a touch and go and refuelling point. This was as the runways were being laid at Cranwell South and was used for both day and night flying instruction, how long this lasted I don't know as it was still operating when I left in March 1956.
Aircraft in use in my time: Prentice (initial) Harvard (advanced), Chipmunk(I), Bolton Paul Balliol(A), Provost(Piston I), Provost(Jet), Vampires(T9 & T11), AVRO Ansons(HQ Flight North Airfield).
I have a few photos, including the original Control Tower, small and black & white which I will be happy to send if anyone is interested. Up to March 1956 Cranwell was NOT used as a V bomber dispersal site (unless just in theory, unknown to me), and the new tower had not been built at that date, although building was in progress. Regards Billco
Welcome to the ARG forum Billco, it's always a pleasure to get the stories from ex servicemen so post away and yes, would definitely like to see those pictures. Are you able to scan them electronically and put them on here?
