The war memorial seems to be a thing that occurred nationally after WW1. Were/Are there many memorials to individuals or groups killed in battles in previous wars or skirmishes? I suspect the Boer War and Crimean may be contenders but not sure about earlier ones.
I am discounting battlefield markers and memorials and probably those to the privileged who could afford private mausoleums and plaques.

There are a few around Scotland because clans killing each other was the national sport though they were often erected many years later by clan associations like the ones supposedly marking clan graves at Culloden.
