There is the 1899 Pilcher Memorial in the grounds of Stanford Hall, near Rugby.
The inscription reads:
"Icaro Alteri

Percy Pilcher
Pioneer of Aviation
Fell Here
September 30
1899."

Wasn't there something mentioned in The Scriptures when Pontius was a Pilate, I just couldn't resist that one, sorry :-)

Paul (B) - did the Percy Pilcher memorial have something on top of it at some point? It certainly looks as though it should have.

I've not found any reference to anything having been on top of the column.
Perhaps it was intended to be "unfinished", like Mr Pilcher's work.

Pimpernel wins, though it wasn't a competition as such, I was just wondering how long it would take someone to find Standon Green End, which is about a couple of miles from my house!! Well done Pimpernel.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
