It's in the Daily Mail today so probably been picked up by other national papers.

The Memphis Belle connection just didn't sound right to me - dates and crew lists available on the web. Only a couple of the original reports mentioned this, but a few days later the famed B-17 had become the highlight of numerous reports. They even showed MB clips on the ITV news where it was stated that Melvin was a pilot! ITV news is normally much better than that.

However the Washington Post has just announced that Melvin was not associated with the Memphis Belle. I wonder if all the other reports will be corrected. In the interests of sensationalism I doubt it.

RIP Melvin Rector USAAF.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

There is a record for a Melvin Rector in the US Army Enlistment Records on Fold3 archive but only sparse detail.

Looks as if i shall have to keep reminding myself not to believe everything I read in the newspapers!

But, Memphis Belle or not he made his mark.
