Bude at War - As if you needed an excuse to holiday in Cornwall

The links are to details of the Bude at War event on the weekend of 16/17 September 2017. Looks like a great event in a fantastic location that was the UK base for the US Rangers training for Point du Hoc.

Some photos from today at the Bude at War event. Note the blue skies while parts of Cornwall had flooding today!


The Wardens post and Shelter. On the hour every hour they gave a talk on ARP. Sadly little specific to Bude but then it did only suffer one raid I believe!

The entrance to the main camp which was full of re-enactors and other historical and military groups and lots of WW2 vehicles. Plenty to see and hear (thanks to the Every Night Something Awful entertainment!) The Americans were well represented as they were in Bude prior to D-Day, but there was a good showing from the Brits too!



Continues tomorrow with a Service of Remembrance at the US Rangers Memorial, speeches from Churchill, Eisenhower and Montgomery from the Surf Life Saving Club and a mock beach invasion at Crooklets Beach.

It was chucking it down here yesterday, but then I live on a hill so no flooding. Watched the local motor hill climb in the valley at the northern end of the former Treligga range, much mud!

Well done to all who organised and took part in this superb two day event at Bude.
Please do it again. It was educational, reflective, historical and fun!
It was a fitting memorial to all those who served and trained in Cornwall during WW2.

To me it was a face full of memories. Memories of lost comrades, and a determination to say "We will remember them."
And yes, a generation that sacrificed so much so we, the often unknowing generation that take so much for granted, could live in freedom and peace, deserve our full support and respect.
