Certainly based on today, and not unreasonably, you can rely on the waypoints but not necessarily so precisely on the routes between them.....

I was positioned on a route and they were a mile or so north of me, positioned I think because they were planned to make a turn south at the next waypoint

It is just to have a rough idea of the route, which direction they might be coming from and also if they are possibly going to go near any friends' locations.

I think they must have missed the significance of the word "Flypast" ....

It would be rather nice if they ended the week by joining the flypast in Sheffield on Friday.

It does not appear that there will be a specific NOTAM for Thursdays Flypasts
