Lord Lieutenant of Kent - B of B Airfield Tour

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the Lord Lieutenant of Kent has organised a tour of airfield sites in Kent that were involved in the Battle. The tour will take place on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th of July. At each site, a short ceremony will take place, at which a brief description of the airfields role, together with a tribute to those who fought in the Battle will be given. This will be followed by a short service and wreath laying. Local Civic Heads have been invited, together with members of veterans organisations. Details and approximate timings are as follows.

Monday 19 July

10.30 The Aviation Memorial, Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppey.
11.30 The Airfield Memorial, Kent County Showground, Detling.
12.15 The new Airfield Memorial, Rochester Airport.
13.15 The Airfield Memorial outside Cascades Leisure Centre, Gravesend.
15.15 The RAF West Malling Memorial, Kings Hill.

Tuesday 20 July

10.30 The Memorial by the Spitfire & Hurricane Museum, Manston.
12.00 Ceremony at Lympne Airport.
13.00 The Hawkinge Battle of Britain Museum.
13.45 The Battle of Britain Memorial, Capel-le-Ferne, Folkestone.

Due to the vagaries of traffic between the sites, all timings are estimated.

I notice a new memorial at Rochester, do you have any further info or photos? Where at the airport is it?

In fact, the memorial is being constructed at the moment, and it is hoped that it could be unveiled during the Lord Lieutenants visit. The memorial is sited next to the control tower, close to the viewing enclosure. Watch this space.
