Thanks for that.

Sooooooo many memories came flooding back as I remembered some of the valves used in Nav C equipments (Cossor 787 and PAR-3C in my days). And of scorched fingers from changing some of the more powerful ones!

The first systems I worked on after training were TACAN which were American and so used American valves.

Long time ago now but I think the id's were number letters number

Ah yes - as in 6V6, 6L6, 6SN7, 12AX7.The first figure was the heater voltage: 6.3 or 12.6.
Then there were the compact versions: 6V6GT etc.(Anything with a 'GT' suffix sounds good)

Some USA valves were just a number: 807 813

Then there was: The EF50, the Tube that helped to Win the War

IIRC the term 'EF50' always had to be preceded by the word 'ubiquitous'.

I bought a T1154 transmitter for £1 (I was at school). It came without the two Power Amplifiers (PT15 / VT104). A short time later I managed to acquire just one. Fitted it managed to get heater supplies and 600V (shoud be twice that) to it. Switched it on and it wiped out next doors TV reception.

A fine example of learning by experience.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite :twisted:

Thank you for the information regarding the CV series of valves...I began working for GEC in 1964 as a trainee before starting a technical apprenticeship in 1966...my duties involved testing electronic components including valves and semiconductors...Many were in the"CV" series and I asked what that stood for......I was informed that "CV" stood for commercial value..It never really made any sense to me...I can understand common valve but how does that relate to semiconductors with "CV" numbers?

I also queried what "BNC" meant with reference to RF connectors...I never did get an answer,very strange as GEC was then a World class company with lots of gen blokes....Thanks to the internet I havejust discovered what it stands for,you live and learn!

There were also "VT" valves used in WWII - Valve Transmitting (not sure if there was a VR series?

I took a few pictures of the valves floating in the Type 7 on Tiree (scroll down)

Can't find in his book but I think that Robert Buderi argued that the crystal detector was as important as many other development in radar because it made the receivers much more sensitive.

Oh so many (more) memories flooding back.

I think that the most common valves we seemed to get through on PAR 3C and Cossor 787 were CV4014 and CV4024!. And, I think, if my memory serves me properly, that the CV4014 (civilian reference 6064?) might have been a pentode (?) and the CV4024 (civilian reference 12AT7?) a double triode (?). I just know that we always had absolutely loads available at all times and the CV4024 was very prone to mains hum due to heater/cathode problems.

And the good ol' valve tester (CT46?). Didn't get used that often. Just bung a new valve in instead. We had a Ch/Tech on the section who thought that we could spend a weekend day doing 'progressive servicing' by testing all (yes, all!) the valves, on the valve tester, in some parts of the equipment and replacing any 'dodgy' ones. It took us three days to get that radar back working and set up properly.

Memories on Tacan are not good! As a Nav C Radar Fitter, MPN-11/PAR 3C/Cossor 787/Plessey AR-1 were my forte! And then some _&*((*^%_ at Innsworth posted me to Masirah where they had ACR7D and Tacan... but British Tacan! - both being Nav B equipment. Well ACR7D wasn't too bad; but I never did get to grips with that Tacan - so tended to leave that alone!

CV = Commercial Valve, evidently an 'all services' number which replaced the separate Army / Navy / RAF designations

The infamous 9D2 valve which cause serious problems in the R1124 SBA Main Beacon receiver was known as the ARP3 (Army receiving pentode 3), VP13C (RAF) and CV1106

I came across this website about Mullard.

This caught my eye

WF ASM Ltd, Broadstone
X MOV, Springvale, pre Oct 1951
Y MOV, Moray, pre April 1945
YA Leigh Electronics, Havant


Suggests MOV had something in Moray in WWII.

I found this which some connection between Osram and William Wilson (electrical wholesaler).

I am suprised by the interest my post has generated which i had thought to be a bit dry as dust so ithink i shall indulge in some nostagia.
As a young kid i well remember the warm hum as the Bakelite Wireless warmed up before listening with mother,at junior school when transistors had come in listening to the new Radio one on cheap small portable Trannies cased in garishley coloured plastic and the more mature joys at 16 of my ITT KB (now Motorola) 3 waveband radio which i used as a mono amplifier on a small record deck. The sounds on shortwave of all the cold war radio jamming ,wierd whines that i supposed might be encoded messages fornuclear submarines Radio Kiev with its endlessly repeated call sign played on a xylophone and the numerous other english language broadcasts of many a Warsaw pact country whose prpaganda was so blatantly poor that they were comic.
these next photos are for the nostalgia and date from 1915 to the 1950's. enjoy
