Only a few weeks ago, my grand daughter now a first year UNI student asked me "Were you in the First World War pappy" And she was not joking

Not at all surprising if you have no interest in WW2 or specifically RAF history. Many people under 40 haven't got a clue about WW2 history as it doesn't appear to be taught at schools - it wasn't when I was at school in the sixties. Hollywood is the supplier of facts these days.

Such a shame really as there are some valuable lessons there.

Not really having too-much interest in the King's and Queen's of England, I wanted to learn of the two World Wars at school. We never had any of that at Primary school, so I hoped we would at secondary school. No-such luck, by the time it came for me to leave, April 1972, we hadn't even come anywhere near WW1. A BIG disappointment, so I had to buy some of my own books on the subject (s) Though the discovery of a large box of my Dad's WW2 Air force books was a big help.

Back in the late 90s I used to go past a large-ish Hotel on the A1, North-bound. This, I discovered was often used by Guy Gibson, and Co' for some 'Wild' parties. Calling in there one day I asked at reception if there is any kind of commemorative plaque to Guy Gibson ? The young lady (About 23) looked at me inquisitively, Who ? sorry, I have never heard of him, what did he do ? I explained briefly, knowing it was a waste of time... Just seemed a bit strange to have mentioned such a famous name, in a place that he had frequented often, and for him not to be known ! If the Walls could have talked... but they just listen..

Hi Guys I am not surprised about young people not knowing about Dowding . In this age of political correctness , The loony left want us to feel ashamed of our past . so these subjects are not taught . I f we don't teach about our past good & sometimes not so good how can we learn from the past so history doesn't repeat it self ?
