Wartime Grid References

There is a further problem with PNK's list from TNA. For each site a 1" map number is given, but an extensive search of the web has failed to find a sheet index for the system. 1945 Cassini references are available but they don't fit what we have.

Basically N. Ireland, Scotland, and England/Wales each have their own numbering system - starting at Map No.1

Examples are:.

Holy Island, Northumberland - sheet 1 & 2
Holmpton, Yorks - sheet 34
Hells Mouth, Lleyn Peninsula - sheet 49
Cannock Chase, Staffs - sheet 62
Orfordness, Suffolk - sheet 87
Chivenor, Devon - sheet 118
Culmhead, devon - sheet 129
Kennack (Lizard), Cornwall - sheet 146

Tiree - Scotland 52
Wigtown - Scotland 91

The above examples are all 'well-known' places. Many of the others in the list are unheard of. Need to get a grip on this.

Any clues, guys?

Think I've found it via a series of links.

It's the Wartime Popular Edition, England and Wales.

For Scotland: www.charlesclosesociety.org/files/SC_63_POP.pdf

This is interesting

Part of the problem is that sometime the wrong Cassini square is thrown up by the online converter. Changing it to the next square got the correct location. Some of the location still don't work but my fail rate is within the 5-10% region.
Upton is still a mystery.

Oh and thanks for the Map number key. That helps confirm the grid more easily. All we need is the whole Cassini grid as an overlay in GE, not just the maps (I'm never satisfied, just like the wife).

All I need now is a complete list of Admiralty ranges.

Some of the location still don't work but my fail rate is within the 5-10% region. My experience too.

All I need now is a complete list of Admiralty ranges. Which reminds me - one source I have mentions 'Moving Target Bombing Ranges':
Fowey was used by St Eval, and Shoreham by Thorney Island.

This list also mentions a few Turret ranges which I will add to the MTR thread.

The quest continues.
