Can anyone recommend one of these scanners from personal experience ? The Canon Canoscan 5600F got a good review in a recent Sunday Times but a quick Google search also rates the Epson Perfection range , particularly the V600 . It needs to produce high quality copies and not be technically difficult to use . All suggestions welcome !
Prints are easy as most flatbed scanners will produce good results. I found slides and negatives more problematic. Because of the sheer number of slides I have I opted for a Nikon Slide scanner and although slow it gives good results. The price is the big problem. I bought mine out of my last bonus, a few years back at £400+ (only banks have bonus now as ours was based on success).
I have an old Canon flatbed scanner, bought in pre-Windows XP days. It produced acceptable results with slides but the DPI was too small to enlarge too much. As long as the scanner has the proper backlighting for slides/negs it should be okay but I can't recommend one I'm afraid.
I have found the reviews in places like Amazon helpful and some can be quite informative. You can usually spot the ones who moan about everything.

My wife's digital camera, the only one we own, is a Pentax but has a non-interchangeable lens. I have made up an adapter to put over the lens with a holder for a 35mm transparency. By using the macro focus it takes good copies of slides, just needs a constant source of 'flat' illumination fairly easily achieved.
It's a slow process but for items out of the scrap-box works pretty well.
I bought an EPSON V500 and very happy with the results !
