I have sent off a request for information to the United States Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB, giving full details of the records I am after.
Does anyone have any recent experience of using them? I am interested in response times and likely cost.
Also there was mention that some microfilms have been digitised and are available on CD for $30. There is no indication as to which microfilms they might be.

The folks at Maxwell are really great about responding in a timely fashion. Why the 5 day wait though? Wait for the money order? Wait for the trans-atlantic snail mail?
I just ordered a document from them and got it via email in a PDF file. I assume yours is not available that way?
No, the wait is for my bank to do the money order (whatever that is). Thought about sending cash but it might carry some dreadful disease that will wipe out the orange crop and therefore get siezed by some acronym. We have about $60 lying about plus a pocketfull of loose change from our visit to RAF Lakenheath back in 1989.
I am in no hurry so I'll chat to the bank next week. I wonder what you do if you are only using internet banking?
(I assume the monery order thing is computerised which is why it takes the bank so long)

Hmmm... I wonder if a "money order" is different in the US than in the UK. I can go to any number of shops, gas stations, banks, and post offices and get one in a matter of a few minutes.
I think you might be right. I was told there was a fee of about £12 for each "money order". Another bank rip off by the sound of it. I hope this will be suffient to purchase the CD.
I noticed a couple of files on Snettisham Gunnery Range as well - different microfilm though. Shame.

That will teach them for forcing me to move my ISA EVERY year to get an interest rate slightly better than me actually paying them.

I e-mailed them this afternoon regarding all the Deenethorpe files for the 401BG Association, which are spread over some 17 rolls of microfilm/CD.
The reply came back in 12 minutes, very impressive!
I'll also be ordering the main reel for the Snettisham Station Histories April 43 - October 44, gotta be worth $30.
Sadly, the other files on Snettisham ("Correspondence pertaining to the camp, 1942-43" and the really interesting looking "Syllabi of Instructional Courses, Air Division Gunnery School 1944") are buried within the 1st Air Division records on seperate reels.
Looks like I'm going to be doing a round-robin deal with my US customers.... wristwatches in exchange for information.
