Strange how different authors have different opinions for the dates of the Battle of Britain. One of my recent books about this subject states July-October 1940. A 1941 publication I have says August - October 1940.

Strange that an Air Ministry document gives a start date of 8th August, but the date for the Battle of Britain clasp on the 39-45 star is 10th July-31st October.
To be honest cabberra, I don't think anybody really knows the exact date the battle actually started?? But to say May as the start date is I think a bit premature...... Then who knows ?????
I have not read the book but it was sent to me as an offer from Amazon. I thought £11:25 for 592 pages in hardback sounded a keen price. It has good reviews and is written by a contemporary author, who may not have the prejudices of the older generation.
I have recently read books by younger authors who have had enlightening information and views on interesting topics, perhaps they have benefited from more recent TNA releases. I would recommend A Life in Secrets by Sarah Helm concerning Vera Atkins and the lost SOE agents and Anthony Blunt-His Lives by Miranda Carter
If James Holland has had the benefit of ploughing through TNA files then they will be listed in his sources, though I agree £11.25 is exceedingly good value - why is it so cheap? Interesting though in the 303 Squadron ORB (one of the most successful BofB squadrons) it actually states that the first operation (for 303) took place on 30-08-40 ! (I can post the full detail if required) so I agree with airfieldsman on this occasion - May is a bit excessive
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
