USAAF Station Numbers

Re TNA document: AIR22/326

United States Army Air Forces in UK and North West Europe - LOCATION STATEMENT

It seems to have been produced by 85 ADO (US) (what is this?) and lists all the bases in use in September 1944 with personnel (No of Officers and Enlisted Men), and aircraft (if an airfield site).

Interestingly only names are given, there are no station numbers.

I believe that ADO is for Army Direct Ordering.

The Air Force Historical Research Agency ( www.afhra.af.mil/timelines/index.asp ) has three documents listing USAAF station:

Installations, USAAF Combat Units in UK, 1942 - 1945 [PDF]

Neither of the documents was originated in the time frame 1942-45. Sources of the information are unclear. Lists on websites may or may not be based on the AFHRA documents. At best these documents may regarded as secondary source material.

The Location Statement cited by Carnaby appears to be the closest yet to a primary source. I have requested a copy from TNA, which I hope may give some clues to the direction for further research.
