Thanks for that link, very interesting. The boreholes for Windrush are very interesting when you consider the drawings and the date the survey was done...

During WW2 a lot of prospecting for minerals (aggregate) for airfield construction was done by gangs with hand shovels - in the form of deep step trenches. Several fields at Rackheath were done this way - must have been exceedingly dangerous work.

A lot of bore hole strata survey maps on expansion period airfields are located at RAFM, usualy the first contract of works drawings and mainly those of the later schemes such as Oakington or where additional L scheme works were carried out (such as all exp period airfields). Water bore hole data is available at TNA for 1920s airfields, some having very thick files, like Andover for example.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

AP3236 (Works) mentions boreholes for source of water so as not to strain the meagre local supplies.

Yes, rather more than I expected, around 200 until you find that many airfields had multiple water bores.
