Hi OEB, what was the charge per picture for what you mention above? One thing that puts me off EH and ordering pictures online/post is the cost.

I didn't get prints from EH - to be honest their photocopier was good enough in "picture mode" and only cost about 30p per A3 copy. I actually took a digital camera with me to Swindon and you're allowed to photograph the pictures for personal/research use. They have various shot bags and strings to help hold the edges down and if you're lucky for a cloudy day or can mask the sunshine from the skylights with a sheet of A4 while you take the pictures you can get VERY good results with a DLSR.

From AIR 20/7585&6 I stumped up the £20 quid to get the PRO to enlarge the photos in-house and they send them over to me in a poster tube about 3 weeks later. As mentioned they were a bit grainy but I did get them enlarged to 4x original size but they were sharp and they obviously knew what they were doing in the lab.

EH used to do Laser copies which were in between print and photocopy quality but as OEB says the photocopy at A3 is good enough for research and it now appears to be almost as good as the Laser copy was. Never sure what a Laser Copy was as most photocopiers use lasers!

This is descending into the domain of nerds but if you specifically use the photo mode on the EH copier (and most modern ones) the results are very good and get better if you scale small photos up as large as you can onto A3. I've scanned in a few A3 enlargements and then shrunk them back down to original size and apart from a slight lost in contrast are good enough. As good if not better than the cruff on Google Earth :)

The copier at the IWM picture archive is good too.

Maybe we need a thread on best museum photocopiers :D

When I update the list next I will attempt to move the NMR/EH elements to the NMR/EH thread, if it exists.

Having been frustrated in recent visits with lack of Bombing Range material in ORB's and related files I decided to add a bit of airfield work to my visit and another three cracking files of general airfield interest. I suspect some of you already know about these or have already viewed them.

AIR 14/3563 - A collection of small airfield photos dating from 1941-3. Mostly bomber related, either Sqn or OTU but include some early views of airfields before runways or extension. Warboys before runway extensions, Bircotes as a collection of fields with just circular hardstands, Finningley before runways, Wescott under construction and, for some reason, many copies of Cheddington covering different dates.

AIR 20/7584 - A collection of Work Dept plans with many airfield buildings and the odd airfield, Debden (193?), St Athan (1937) - with buildings key. Some depots and radar/AMES sites included. As it is in a bound folder it is difficult to photograph as part is covered by the binding. These are clearly all copies reduced from the larger originals, which may or may not still exist.

AIR 20/7587 - Like above but photographs of buildings, mainly late war or early post war. Also includes some fuel depot photographs and electrical gear and standby generator equipment.

As in the previous files my attempts to photograph them clearly have not succeeded. The photos are all in glossy protective covers and the plans were stiff enough to not lay flat even with those snake weights. I also got reprimanded for trying to hold them flat. Both the AIR 20 files are multiple volumes.

I may get around to cataloguing them but I haven't finished the first lot yet!

Peter, I somehow missed your excellent updates on this thread, and just seen your list in PDF, looking forward to the J-Z volume!

Can you remember, is the St Athan plan the one that doesn't show East camp at all, ie just ARD site?

It only shows the ARD site and says it was compiled from drawings 3614/37 & 3615/37.

I have hopefully sent you an email too.

I'm afraid there wasn't. The building photos were mainly unallocated and those that were seemed to be because they differed or were of a new type. I will set to work completing the contents but this will take a while at my typing speed.

I have now completed the contents of AIR 20/7585 & AIR 20/7586 (Plans of airfields with aerial photos) and this is below. I have also attached the original contents list for AIR 20/7584 (Plans of airfield and other buildings).
I will add the contents of AIR 20/7587 (Building photographs) at a later date as there are 383 photos and no existing index.
