Unpublished Fieldwork Reports (Grey Literature Library)

Some unpublished archaeological reports have been made available on the ADS site , there are several on airfields.

e.g.

Gaskell, N. (2007) 'Archaeological Walkover and Evaluation on Land at Carlisle Airport, Cumbria.'
North Pennines Archaeology Ltd

Cocroft, W. and Cole, S. (2007) 'RAF Coltishall, Norfolk: a photographic characterisation'
English Heritage Research Department

A big frustration is when you see reports given as sources but they are not available to the general public.

I posted a link to the Coltishall report last April in post 212 of the Coltishall thread so I am not sure you can say it is unpublished ?

I just quoted the title used by ADS.

There are others on various other wartimes sites from surveys done during building developments and not as widely publilised as those from EH.

Just downloaded again without any problem.

Some reports are viewable rather than downloadable but you can still save them though many (most? all?) are locked to prevent editing.

I have noticed that a lot of local authorities publish large documents on virtually any development that occurs in their area. Do the developers bear the cost of these or is it the councils and therefore the ratepayers? What with archaeological studies and bat counts and orchid counts and geology surveys and....................... it's a wonder anything goes ahead! Still without a coypu study, Cobra Mist might not have gone ahead

It's usually a condition of planning permission so paid by the developer - one reason why it is always worthwhile getting any site of interest (however small) recorded on the HER, SMR or national equivalent like Canmore. It does not give any protection like listing or scheduling but draws the attention of the planners to the existence of something when a planning application comes in. It might not save it but can ensure that it gets professionally recorded in detail.

I was at the Highland Archaeological Festival conference a couple of weekends ago, they have learnt much about Inverness in recent years because there has been a lot of building developments with each one requiring an archaeological survey.
