I was recently contacted by Ross Stewart who has been researching two wartime aircraft wrecks here in Essex.

Having discovered a thread on another forum he wanted to contribute to the thread but couldn't do so initially with forum rules. He asked if I could put him in touch with two of the people who had posted. One of these members did respond and he and Ross have been able to discuss the subject matter.

There is a lot of reading with various links but it is quite an interesting topic. An American Havoc and a JU88 are belived to be in the same piece of water called 'Buxey Sands.' It is possible that the American Havoc contains some of the crew and could be a war grave.

I've marked Buxey Sands with a red circle in the image below, but I don't know exactly where the wrecks are supposed to be situated.

I thought this might be of interest to other members on here especially any living in the area concerned.

Interesting. Prior to following up the other links I do know that Buxey Sand was used as a bombing range around 1943/4, possibly by the USAAF 9th Air Force. The chart attached shows the ranges in the area. Similar sands, although closer to shore used old barges beached on the sands as targets and as Buxey is marked with a specific circle area this implies a fixed target. I wonder if the Havoc was using the range or merely a coincidence. There were too many wreck in the area to be sure if one was a target and besides it is possible any target has long sunk into the sands.

The map was from the US Air Force Historical Research Archive and a poor quality microfilm copy.
