By pure accident I came across a circle of rubble or concrete about 4.5 miles NW of Merthyr Tydfil at SN 98321 10873 on GE. It measures 80 feet in diameter and is about 10 foot thick (60 foot inner diameter). It looks like an early war bombing target, but that is what I want it to be It was also there in 1945 and showed up as light, possibly white.
Any ideas what it could be?
A number of ranges or at least target areas were set up or being looked at in Wales for both live and practice bombing, the latter as part of a cross country navigational exercise. Trawsfynydd was set up as a live range in 1940 but this was an existing War Office range being used as a stop-gap by the RAF.

This site is a Guest house on the moor just SW of the feature. If you read through the owners responses to reviews by former guests it mentions a Bronze Age stone circle:
In that case, would there not be evidence of other gin circles adjacent to the other shafts. I should expect circles where horse powered whim gins were in use but not with engine powered.

Not necessarily Peter. That would depend on the depth of the various shafts (and most will be not be very deep) and the structure of the mining underneath. It's normal to collect material and transport it to one shaft for removal when at depth as that means less time spent removing non-profitable overburden.
