Concrete Blocks Found Near Hunsdons ILS Beacon....Any idea what they where??

History:
The actual ILS 'pad' was connected to a straight concrete trackway. This being approx 10 foot wide and followed the centre line of the runway for approx 170 yards. The opposite end of the runway the ILS pad sits about 400 yards from the end of the runway. This is because in late1941 early 1942 the southern end was given what I believe is known as a 'Charing Cross Extention' whereby an extra 200 yards were added complete with new taxy-way extentions.



The blocks I found, and there are eight, lie on the ground in a line stretching about 15 feet. Each one measures approx 15 X 12 X 12 Inches. The steel plates are extremely rusted and so much flakes off it is hard to say what thickness they were originally, but lets suppose roughly 11 mm. These themselves lie in front of a 6 X 5 foot concrete base. This base itself is 20 foot in front and just a few feet to the right of the ILS pad.



I have added images of the blocks and the concrete pad that I have uncovered. Also an image of what looks to be some type of control box found under one of the blocks. Nearby is a cable duct with a small oblong brick manhole very similar to a transformer pit as used with the DREM lighting system on the airfield. So there was electrical power to this site from the airfield.

Hunsdon had two types of Beam Approach systems: Standard Beam Approach - used on the main runway, and Radar Beam Approach of which there were three versions:
As we're considering a subsidiary runway here it will definitely be a BABS system, and the records confirm that AIBA was installed. It is not known how many were used at Hunsdon. Typically a minimum, of two sets were installed, one could have been in addition to the SBA beacon on the main runway. There were also three version of each of the three BABS beacons: fixed, portable and semi-portable.

My suspicion is that a fixed or semi-portable installation was used in this case.

The aerial systems for the three BABS variants were also completely different. ASVBA used Yagi-Uda aerials like modern TV aerials. (here are pictures somewhere on this forum), whereas AIBA used the Corner Antenna, one example of which is shown below.


Each AIBA installation used three Corner aerials side by side. One, the receiver, pointed up the runway, the other two were angled slightly clockwise and anti-clockwise and produced the transmitted dot and dash homing pulses.

My experience of Beam Approach aerial systems is that the mounting systems often varied considerably from what was depicted in diagrams and photographs. These blocks could well have been Corner Aerial mountings.

What you have shown is extemely interesting to me, and I am certain you are on the right track. There is a similar pad, again offset to the ILS pad and is situated to the left of the main runway at the eastern end.

Just this crop of part of your image is very similar to the blocks I found...
