Gun Positions for Ground To Air Target Practice?? was created by ww2ni
I visited Mount Stewart today and photographed what appear to be 2 Second World War Gun Positions.
I know that Mount Stewart was used as a camp by both the Army and Air Force however I am wondering as to why these positions have been built.
If they were part of defences of the site then why no Pillboxes?
Possibly to defent Newtownards Airfield but is some distance away.
My guess is that they MAY have been for ground to air target practice - Please take a look.
Can you confirm these are gun positions and what type of guns would have been used?

It depends on what type of gun was mounted there. It seems unlikely to be coastal artillery though. Probably low angle AA guns but may be it was for DEMS training?

Have you seen similar structures?
Can you confirm my suspicion that these are Gun Positions?
I have contacted both Mount Stewart, which is now a National Trust property, and local Building Heritage to see if they have any details.
Does the "Mounting" look like anything you have seen before?

I haven't any decent references on gun sites or their platforms but the single bolt mounting doesn't bode well as I would have thought it would be a few more in a circle. The metal ring would suggest a larger mount but also that wheels would run on it. That's as far as I can get apart from halfheartedly suggest a searchlight of some sort.
I have attached a link to the IWM photo collections and a search on DEMS and possible training sites. I suspect these were less glamorous than gunnery type schools so may have been overlooked?

Nothing to suggest DEMS but this is the
RN Close Range AA Training Establishment
at Yesnaby.
