6 RCAF Bomber Group (organisation, airfields, squadrons, aircarft, and their 70 crashes in Belgium (location, crew, evasion lines, cemeteries, PoW Camps, etc...). Busy for a couple of years !!!!!!
The blast walls pictured were installed at a limited number of Fighter Command airfields in 1954-55 when new dispersals were built. I'll come up with a list of candidate airfields for tomorrow but it will probably be one that transferred to Flying Training Command. My first guess would be Stradishall.
The airfields with blast walls of this type on their new dispersals were:
Coltishall
Duxford
Leuchars
Stradishall
Tangmere
Waterbeach
Wattisham
West Malling
Of these, the ones that had Varsities based there after Fighter Command released the airfields were Stradishall (1 Air Navigation School) and Tangmere (115 Sqn). It looks more like Stradishall to me but I'm happy to be corrected.
Wasn't there a Varsity at Wattisham quite a few years ago, I'm sure there is a piccy in airfields of the eighth then and now showing one sat out on the airfield. I don't have my copy at present to have a look.
IMHO it is of Wattisham. It matches the southern end of the airfield as seen in the photo on page 228/229 of Airfields of the Eighth Then and Now, apart from the Varsity not being parked there! Is it a Varsity parked on the western side of the airfield in the photo?
I have to agree with Wattisham as well. The service road and the fields all match. The HAS site has removed the blast walls (and the mast?).
Also I couldn't match it to Stradishall as there were no straight roads near any of the dispersals.
