Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses await test flights prior to joining heavy bomber units somewhere in England, for missions against German aggression in Europe. 13 April 1944.
Signal Corps Neg No. ETO-HQ-44-3199


All the B-17s with visible serial numbers were allocated to the 401st Bomb Group at Deenethorpe, except '518 which went to the 384th BG at Grafton Underwood, within a day or two of being snapped.

But can we work out where this photo was taken?

I have seen that pic before, or at least a similar one. Is it from Footnote?

They look like a mixture of new and refurbs (one tail unit appears to have the remains of a diagonal stripe).

First thought was Langford Lodge, don't know why.

Question is whether it is BAD or SAD.

It's part of the NARA Still Pictures Collection, so I'd presume it's on Footnote somewhere.

I don't think the B-17s in the foreground would be anything other than brand new, simply due to knowing the delivery, photo and assignment dates which would preclude any intermediate service.
Coloured group identification marks hadn't come into use by April 1944 either. ;-)

Could that be an expanse of water in the background, behind the distant building?
