Location and date help please. was created by ted angus
Gents, I have been trying to put a location and date to this incident. The aircraft is a C-54 or a variant of it.
I know by the crash tenders - Bedford QLs - that it is a Ministry of Civil Aviation (or Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation - depending on date) airfield. There is a civil local authority fire engine visible to the left of the aircraft engine in photo t1- It is a Leyland Comet; Kent and Surrey used a lot of this type, Middlesex had one and there was a handful with other brigades.
I have tried pumping the USAF reg into google but the aircraft appears to have survived its USAF service and subsequently went into civillian use. To me it looks as if something has exploded or ignited in the rear of the fuselage ? the aircraft appears to be off the runway , parked on a dispersal or similar ?/ I know Blackbushe often had civvy appliances from just over the border in Surrey attend major incidents , and that BB had that type of Ministry crash truck and was frequently visited by US forces C 54s but I cannot find anything to confirm the true location and a date ? All help gratefully received.

My guess would have been Blackbushe, not sure where else it could be.

Try the Flightglobal site possibly. If you put "Blackbushe C-54" in the search function, then individual years, to zone it down, 1955, then 56 etc you might find something. Even if you don't, you can pass a pleasant evening. Then Manston C-54...

Not Blackbushe; the hangars in the left background are wrong - they look like Bessoneau which Blackbushe never had.
