Yes, but not during RAF service. During the mid 70s I worked for the East Midlands Gas Board Instrument and Communications Dept. While trying to improve point-to-point UHF (450Mhz) for telemetry we tested some helical antennas, made I think by Andrews. As I recall they were no better than multi-element yagi aerials.
