I should read the descriptions a little more carefully! According to the Greenwood museum it was the use of piston engines that really made a difference to endurance. www.gmam.ca/argus--cp-107-.html

Being military the individual crew members would have oxygen available and could go to the maximum service altitude. That it would do more-miles-per-gallon on 100 octane gasoline fed piston engines than AVTUR fed turboprops is intriguing. Clearly fuel costs were not a concern.
I seem to recall something about the Nimrod loitering on two engines, if true, could the Argus do the same or would restarting be a problem and could this also be easier with a piston engine?
