And as was discussed somewhere on this forum a long time back, RAF Watton may have been used and is referenced on page 156 of the history, I will have to down load the file and have a proper gander

A friend, who once lived near Watton, told me he saw one there in 1959.

My recollection is that the English Electric Lightning could intercept a LH U2 at 70,000 plus feet while the European version of the F104 could not as supplied from the manufacturer.
The final US versions of the F104 could reach 90,000 feet and the EEL could operate at around 80,000 feet.
2 U2s flew into Fairford on Saturday, Callsign Dragon 21 and 31, and where due to leave on Sunday, the U2s still use Fairford on a fairly regular basis over a year, i hear them quite often on the scanner transiting the airways
Amused to see a U2 at Fairford on Google Earth Historical imagery supposedly for 30 June 2003

One of the best aviation experiences I have ever had involved a 3 month romance with the U-2, she woke me up every morning!! I got to chase the dragon lady a couple of times too, amazing.
Thanks for that. Back in the mid nineties the BBC 2 series"timewatch" did a programme on the RAF overflights of Russia using B45s and Canberras, they also mentioned RAF pilots flying U2s. They actually interviewed an RAF U2 pilot it was a very brief interview, all he said was that he flew U2s nothing else.

Would that have been Akrotiri by any chance? It always took off about 7am when I was there for ATC camp in '86 just as we were walking across to the mess for breakfast.
Back at Farnborough, I often watched them (or what I believe to be them) inbound to Alconbury from the direction of France; you could easily tell which aircraft they were; who else would fly at FL660?
When I looked at this on my mobile the wrap around gave me "I got to chase the dragon" at the end of one line. Now I look at it on my PC it still has the same feel
